To stare at the sea beyond the sea

To stare at the sea beyond the sea

beyond the break and the swell

is to gaze at nothing,

a nothing that defies belief in nothingness,

whose opposite brings a slow forgetting.

Stare at the shore,

where flames swell and glass breaks

purpose from the sea’s murmured verse,

where lights cut a path across and

smoke floats from its breath.
